*** Big Weather Changes for the Week Ahead!!! *** Here are some highlights of the weather changes you can expect for the upcoming work week. > Sunday...strong cold front moves through. In advance of the front...warm southwest winds will erode the cold air wedge in place...but will also bring widespread rain showers to the region. Expect 1.0 to 1.5 inches of rainfall for much of the forecast area through Sunday afternoon. Most of this will fall before noon. Gusty southwest winds can also be expected...especially across far southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia. Temperatures ahead of the front will be unseasonably mild in the 50s and 60s Sunday. Enjoy...because it will be a LONG time before we see anything that mild again! > Sunday Night and Monday...cold front moves east of the area. Precipitation ends...except for some snow showers across the Alleghanys. Temperatures become much colder for Monday....but nothing compared to what is coming later in the week. > Wednesday...Bitter cold Arctic front moves through the region. Temperatures plummet to levels we saw about the same date last year...namely below zero across northern counties such as Greenbrier and Bath. Dangerously cold wind chills to -20F! > Thursday morning will bring the coldest temperatures for the week...as cold as -10F possible in the northern counties to near +10F across the Piedmont. > Friday through Saturday...slowly moderating temperatures...but still cold and below normal. Lows in the teens and 20s. Highs mostly 30 to 40. Despite all the cold temperatures expected next week...at this point we do not foresee any significant threat of winter precipitation. The air mass will be bone dry and there are no weather systems beyond Sunday that bring moisture from the Gulf or Atlantic to support much precipitation. However, there will be mountain snow showers...but at this point...given the dryness of the air mass...accumulations will be quite light even in those areas. The main story for the week will be the COLD!
