Big box retailers have to collect online sales tax if they have a store within the state. But us small businesses who are very small and very local would have to start collecting sales tax, too, if we sold online but out of state. That could cripple just about all small business in the United States. Of course, tax collected is just funneled into your business and right back out again so it is money that doesnt belong to the store owner anyway. However, its the logistics... Ive been working diligently on launching my website. If I have to now try to keep track of sales in potentially every state in the Union, it would cripple me, too. One thing Ive definitely learned about opening a small business is that its all the government red tape that gets in the way. All the accounting and the documenting and keeping up with the different types of taxes (workmans comp; federal and state unemployment; withholdings; sales taxes; and on and on and on....) that is the hardest! CONGRESS - PLEASE DO NOT MAKE SMALL BUSINESSES START CHARGING OUT OF STATE SALES TAX. Its just one more burden on small businesses.
