Big day for civil and environmental students Students of computer, electrical and other engineering subjects often get a chance to exhibit their researches and creative ideas through various competitions. But, compared to them such opportunities are rare for civil and environmental engineering students. So, we a group of students of this discipline thought ‘why not a festival for civil and environmental engineers?” As planned, we did some background checks and hit upon the idea of arranging CENNOVATION, which stands for Civil and Environmental Innovation. A two-day function was chalked out, featuring project showcasing, poster presentation, mechanics Olympiad, inter university quiz contest, case study analysis competition and environmental photography. The program was scheduled on May 31 and June 1, location Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and organiser was the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of IUT. The announcement was circulated in universities across the country, especially in engineering universities and a website containing the proceedings of the competition was launched. The program was the first of its kind in Bangladesh, and we the organisers were tensed about how it was going to shape up. But the arrival of participants from the early morning on the first day of the competition put us somewhat at ease. In total, around 500 students from 15 universities showed up to participate in the event. The campus took up a festive look, buzzing with chattering and footsteps of participants. After a formal inauguration, where communication minister Obaidul Kader was chief guest, competitions of different segments started in full swing. In the mechanics Olympiad, participants brainstormed to get the answer of tricky problems. The solutions were very simple, but they had to catch the tricks first. It was evident from their facial expressions that the river of mechanics is very difficult to swim! In the Inter University Quiz Contest, six universities (IBA-DU, IBA-JU, Brac University, BUET, IUT and Dhaka Medical College) competed in the final round after qualifying in the preliminary written round. The competition was real hard and BUET team clinched the title outrivalling a tough contest put up by Dhaka Medical College team. “Climate Change: Adaptation or Mitigation?” was the topic for the case study analysis competition. Three teams from BUET, one team from IUT and one from KUET participated in the final round. The teams justified their stand on the topic by presenting their logics in front of the judges. The project showcasing and poster presentations were related to civil and environmental engineering. Many interesting and innovative projects were showcased by the participants. The visitors were seemed really happy and appreciated the inquisitive works of the future civil engineers. Here are the list of winning projects and teams in all the events: Project Showcasing: 1st : Smart Agro Sense (IUT), 2nd : Digital Survey Machine (RUET) and3rd Rainwater Harvesting in Cricket Stadium (BUET) Poster Presentation: 1st: Determination of Modulus of Rupture for Concrete made of Recycled aggregates (University of Asia Pacific), 2nd: Emission by the construction sector (RUET) and 3rd: Incoming Vehicle Detection (BUET) Inter University Quiz Contest: Champion: BUET and Runner-up: Dhaka Medical College. Mechanics Olympiad: 1st: Md. Rashedul Islam (BUET), 2nd: Md. Nizamul Hoque Mojumder (BUET), 3rd: Sheikh Shakib (KUET). The other session titled “Safety Management in Construction”, was conducted by Md. Masud Sheikh, Chief Structural Engineer, SEL Bangladesh. After finishing all the events, the prizes were distributed among the winners. The program was sponsored by “Pure It Water Purifier” and daily sun was its media partner.
