Big day tomorrow and a packed September on tap! Hi Everyone! With Hurricane Cristobal making its way up the coast and swell already in the water today, please remember to be careful, watch out for each other, and most important, know your limits, and trust your instincts: If you are not comfortable paddling out, dont! If you do paddle out, as with any big swell, expect and anticipate the drift and be extremely aware of the location of the jetties (and other surfers) as you line up your waves. Be smart, be safe and have fun! Tomorrows swell will come and go and August may be winding down, but theres still a lot of summer left and a lot of surf events filling the calendar! On Sunday, August 31st, the Resurf Stoked with a Purpose Surfathon Festival is taking place on National Blvd beach. The festival includes free surf beginner lessons, a surfboard repair clinic, surfboard street art demo, a live DJ, raffles, prizes, giveaways and more. For more information, click here: nynjsurf/forum/the_rockaway_long_beach_surf_connection/resurf_stoked_purpose_surfathon_festival_sun_aug_31_2014_national_blvd_39238.0.html or visit resurfproject.org . On Sunday, September 7th, get ready for one of our favorite events of the year: The annual King and Queen of the Beach contest presented by the City of Long Beach and Skudin Surf will be taking place on Long Beach Blvd! Sponsors include - US! The Long Beach Surfers Association, as well as our great friends Palazzo Construction, McAvoy Plumbing and unsOund Surf. We will need plenty of help that day, so if you can volunteer some time and help out, please send me an email. For entry forms and complete information, please click here: nynjsurf/forum/the_rockaway_long_beach_surf_connection/king_and_queen_beach_contest_sun_sept_7th_2014_long_beach_ny_39221.0.html On Saturday, September 13th, Moku Surf is proud to present the first annual Long Beach Longboard Classic on National Blvd. The event promises to be spectacular, and the Long Beach Surfers Association is proud to have signed on a sponsor. We are hoping for some great local representation - if you would like to enter or simply volunteer to help, please stop by Moku for an application and for more information. Entry forms will be available online shortly as well. Thursday, September 18 through Sunday, September 21st unsOund Surf will present the 2014 unsOund Pro! For 17 years, Dave and Mike have brought this tremendous event to our City, featuring some of the best surfers in the world, and this year promises to be better than ever. For more information, please check here: https://unsoundsurf/unsound-surf-pro On Friday, September 19th, we encourage everyone to come out for Casino Night at the Bridgeview Yacht Club in support of Robert Browne. Robert sustained a spinal cord injury surfing right here in Long Beach on July 3rd. Roberts a great kid with a tremendous will to get better, but he and his family need the support of all of us. I will be there, I hope to see all of you there as well. For more information, please click here: longbeachsurfersassociation/2014/08/join-team-robert-browne/ - or donate directly here: teamrobertbrowne.org/donations/ - and you can follow Roberts progress on the Team Robert Browne facebook page here: https://facebook/TeamRobertBrowne September winds down with yet another contest, this time in nearby Gilgo Beach as the Eastern Surfing Association presents the 26th Annual Bunger Surf Classic on September 27th. Wile the LBSA is not directly involved in this event, we believe its extremely important to remember the role the Bungers have played in NY surfing history and recognize that much of what we have right here in Long Beach began with the Bungers and their tremendous support of surfers and surfing all along our Long Island coastline. Speaking from personal experience, this event is among the best each and every year for surfers on Long Island. If you are interested in competing, visit the ESA-NY website here: ny.surfesa.org. Finally, as Labor Day weekend approaches, I would like to ask each and every one of you to take a moment to stop by the lifeguard stands and the the lifeguard hut to thank the crew and Chief Gillespie for another spectacular summer. Once again, they have gone above and beyond to protect our families, our friends, visitors, and all of us. Their job, especially on days like today and tomorrow, is extremely difficult and they do it day in and day out as well as any crew in the world. We owe them our thanks, stop by and let them know we appreciate their efforts! See yall out there - be safe!
