Big news! All the deer have been released (except Noble, who is non-releasable, and Jingles, who is temporarily keeping Noble company as he gets used to the changes.) Morrow has taken the others into the woods to teach them the ways of free deer. I will see some of them again from time to time. The wild group will leave, never to be seen again (as it should be). We had a GREAT group of deer this year, in that they are ALL ready to go. Jingles is the only one I worry about. She has still retained more pet in her than I would like (and this is why she will keep Noble company while the others acclimate to life in the wild). She will join the others in a few days and will be safer since the rest of the herd will be more knowledgeable having had this head start. So it will be advantageous on both sides to have this arrangement with her. Morrow was a superb mentor for the babies and literally whipped a few of the pet fawns into shape. It was horrible for me to watch, but it was much better than the horrible death they would have had if she hadnt taken charge and showed them how to be proper deer. (People who make pets out of deer dont understand all the intricacies of being a deer in the wild and the disservice they are doing to this impressionable prey animal.) As hard as it was to watch, Morrow did what she had to do to give them a chance at living a long and happy life in the wild and I am SO grateful to her for doing this. I could not have done what she did. The last time that she let me near her (about a month ago), I thanked her profusely for all her help with the babies this year. It took til mid rehab season for her leg to start bending properly. So she needed us. But, we needed her too. This is the BEST prepared group of fawns EVER!! (And its because of Morrow, not me!) This release was a two day process. We started yesterday. We will post photos/ videos tonight or tomorrow. Yes, I cried.....especially when I saw Wire take his steps outside the fence. Hes my poster child for 2014 for all the life threatening things that can happen to a fawn and STILL survive to release. For me, he represented all the babies that did not get to live all the way to release.....we wanted to save each one, but this is just not possible in too many cases (like the dog attacks, hit by car, and the other things that happen to them before they arrive here). Run strong and free, all my babies!!! I will always be here if you need me again..... But my hopes are that you will never see another human as long as you live. Live free, Babies!!!
