Big news! I just sent off to my academic adviser the complete manuscript for my doctoral dissertation. Its been a huge project and Im really glad its done. I will need to make any needed changes after getting feedback from the adviser and later from a second reader (still to be determined), but hopefully that part of the process will be relatively painless. The dissertation is entitled The Sermon at the Temple in the Book of Mormon: A Critical Examination of Its Authenticity through a Comparison with the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. Its 760 pages long, counting a bibliography that lists 875 publications cited in the text. In the dissertation, I argue that the Sermon at the Temple (3 Nephi 12-14) in the Book of Mormon was composed by Joseph Smith using the Sermon on the Mount in the King James Version, and that it is not an authentic translation of an ancient sermon preached by Jesus in the Americas. The work includes a lengthy chapter examining issues pertaining to the Book of Mormon as a whole, including the gold plates, the witnesses, the Anthon transcript, the lost 116 pages, the seer stone in the hat, the question of what sort of translation Joseph Smith claimed to have made, whether the Book of Mormon narrative can plausibly be set in ancient Mesoamerica, and the dependence of the Book of Mormon on the KJV outside of the Sermon at the Temple.
