Big thanks to Alec who supported me last night when I did a big - TopicsExpress

Big thanks to Alec who supported me last night when I did a big uh-oh mistake before we called it a night at 10pm. I took my insulin and the moment after it was injected in I realized that I had just taken 14 units of short acting Novolog (which I usually take 3-5 units of 3x a daY before meals) instead of long acting Lantus insulin. crap! I had done this once before in the first year I was on insulin which would have been 3-4 years ago. I knew this was bad and so did Alec. That first time I called the nurse hotline of my insurance company and she told me to call poison control and do what they said. So this time I skipped calling my insurance companys nurse and just called poison control. I worked with a very nice nurse (I assume she is a nurse) who told me what I expected - that I would need to stay awake for probably 3-4 hours and test my blood sugar every 50/45/40/35/30 minutes and then call her with the number and do what she said - and that if it dropped below 40 or 50 to call 911 and go to the emergency room. She had me drink juice, eat something, drink juice, eat something, wait, test, call her again... while my blood sugar went from 179>181> (high for me at but I had some carbs at dinner and after) 157>139>145>>141>130 (my low for the night)>138>164 at which point she told me we were done and thanked me for being a good sport. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is scary and not what I usually deal with as my blood sugar tends to run high, not low. So this was one of those times that having diabetes hit me as something more serious/scary than I usually am aware of day to day as I manage it with diet, excercise and meds taken the way they were intended. I hope I never have to do that again! I cant get distracted when taking my meds! And again, thanks to Alec for supporting me so sweetly as we stayed up until it was over at 3:20AM! Okay I think I need a nap now.
