Big thanks to Mike Stevens for sharing another great tip with us: I noticed you were now carrying the Emberlit stove ow.ly/yoKU6 . I remember seeing a post where you were testing stoves. Ive had the Emberlit for a little while now and found a pretty good way to keep a fire going without a lot of hassle. I know most people will start a fire and feed logs into the opening. While I do use it that way sometimes, if youre just looking for a cup of coffee/tea or something like that. Ill saw a log that is small enough diameter to fit vertically with a little space on the sides and short enough that it wont hit the X braces on top. Im sure youve seen the Swedish stove/fire log concept. Well make that small enough to fit in the Emberlit and youre off and running with a fire that will burn long enough to get your tea or coffee. Ill quarter it length wise and put one of my fire starters at the bottom. I take cotton cosmetic pads and put petroleum jelly between them or take one and just smear some on one side and fold it like a taco. Anyway, after I quarter the small log Ill put it on end with the fire starter in between the quartered log. Then whatever other small twigs stacked up to the top. I usually cross those so all 4 quarters have a chance to burn. Lite the starter and youre on your way. It makes things much more controllable in my experience. And you dont have to keep feeding it since you have a larger log slowly burning. Thoughts? This also works with some of the stove stands that come with canteen kits. Just make sure you bury the end of the log maybe a quarter to half an inch to keep it standing upright. Ill take the log before I quarter it and just make a dent in the ground. That also helps keep such a small log together so you dont need to tie it or figure out a way to keep it standing.
