Biker group rides against child begging Even as a group of stunt bikers was attempting to hold Central Delhi to ransom early on Sunday morning, a group of two-wheeler riders from many walks of life gathered and successfully carried out a symbolic ride against organised child beggary. Over 100 bikers, including businessmen, bureaucrats, students and journalists, united under the banner of Ride4Cause, a group of Enfield Bullet enthusiasts, for a circular ride from that began around 8.30 a.m. from Jantar Mantar and travelled via Connaught Place Outer Circle, Barakhamba Road, Pragati Maidan, Mathura Road, South Extension, Dhaula Kuan, Shankar Road and Sardar Patel Marg. “During our movements within the city, we feel extreme pain and anguish when we see children begging on streets and traffic signals. We aren’t affiliated with any political party or movement. It is an individual initiative for a social cause,” said journalist Vivek Pandey, who was part of the ride. “It is our understanding that these children do not beg of their own accord but are forced to do so. There are more than one million street children in India. So even if one child gets Re.1 a day, there is a cash flow of approximately a million rupees per day. By being sympathetic to these children and giving them money, we are helping run a criminal nexus,” Mr. Pandey added. According to him, the objective of the ride was to create awareness that people should not give cash to children. Instead, they should provide them eatables, which they can consume immediately. This way, Mr. Pandey said, the group was hopeful that the beggar mafia’s cash flow can be dented, thereby making it less lucrative. The group said it will continue such rides in the future to bring the cause to the notice of both the general public as well as the government.
