Bill Horist - January 2015 update - New releases - gigs Happy New Year friends! I hope this finds you well in the incipient 2015! Much afoot this year already with new commissions, at least three new albums to be released this year and some touring in the Fall of the US, Europe and Japan! NEW RELEASES More info coming soon but there should be two new CDs and a cassette out by Summer this year. Firstly, a new solo record – music composed for Calgary-based choreographer Davida Monk’s “Dream Pavilion.” The album itself is called “Mutei,” which roughly translates to the name of the dance piece. This CD features a whole lot of guitar, percussion, bass and đàn nguyệt; a Vietnamese Moon Lute I got in Hanoi a few years ago. Artwork courtesy of gifted Japanese illustrator, Kaho. Due out in summer on Important Records. Secondly, a new improvised trio record featuring my longstanding collaborator and alto sax firebrand Wally Shoup as well as our good friend and expansive percussionist Paul Kikuchi. Entitled “Chemical Language,” (in honor of entomologist E. O. Wilson), this album was recorded with assistance from Scott Colburn and Rich Hinklin and evinces sonic environments from the plaintive and textural to slash and burn with numerous stops between. Due out this summer on New Atlantis Records. And lastly, one for all you cassette-isists out there: A limited edition spool of duo selections with the inimitable bassist Darin Gray (Dazzling Killmen, On Filmore, etc). Two magnetic sides of prepared guitar and bass duets recorded a few years ago during out Midwest US tour. Darin is currently handling the low end on tour with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy but we hope to do some more shows during our respective peregrinations in the coming year. Due out this spring on Alterity 101. JANUARY SHOWS A couple great shows coming up this month: Hope to see you out!! The Blue Moon Tavern, 712 NE 45th St (at I-5), 9pm, 21+ Friday January 30 Elevator presents: BILL ORCUTT BILL HORIST SEAN CURLEY Elevator returns from its autumn grave for a series of winter performances in Georgetown. For January, were steering clear of laptops and synths for a night of intrepid experiments from three guitarists. Bill Orcutts late-career renaissance has introduced a whole new generation to his idiosyncratic approach to music. After leading the Miami-based Harry Pussy to hell and back in the 90s, Orcutt seemingly disappeared into Silicon Valley. Thankfully, he returned, ditching the electric sound of his past for a no-less-thrilling four string acoustic. This renaissance has produced a perfect string of albums for Editions Mego, including 2013s A History of Every One. https://soundcloud/bill-orcutt Bill Horist knows the secret language of the guitar. The Seattle-based musician demonstrates these hidden meanings by incorporating tools and processes both traditional and esoteric, incorporating everything from guitar pedals to screwdrivers along the way. billhorist/ Sean Curley explores the transportive function of guitar through ethereal loops and otherworldly textures. https://soundcloud/sean-curley-1 Machine House Brewery, 5840 Airport Way S, Seattle, 9pm, $10 advance, $12 at the door, ALL AGES!
