Bill Nye compares the introduction of modernly lab-designed - TopicsExpress

Bill Nye compares the introduction of modernly lab-designed agricultural GMOs to an invasive species. Impacts unknown and extensive can result, particularly with design for cross species competition, vs. more benign goals of improving three content of the food itself. So even after setting aside the fact that the genetic modification of some foods today are being done for ownership purposes by one corporation which desires control of some staple crops, or that there may be unintended epigenomic consequences to these new transgenic organisms, Nye brings us back to the larger ecosystem risk of unintended consequences. Finally, in a world where there is competitive debate about the resource efficiency of monoculture vs polyculture farming, lets ask, is this really more productive, or is it simply more easily mechanized with cheap fossil fuels?
