Bing Crosbys heyday was a bit before my time. But decades later, it is still hard to escape him as almost the Voice of Christmas with his version of White Christmas, which is still the biggest selling single of all time (physical or digital download). On November 30, 1977, CBS aired Bing Crosbys Merry Olde Christmas, which turned out to be the final of several holiday specials in his career. Bing had died just over a month before of a heart attack, but the show had already been completed, and the network decided to air it to honor the legendary singer/actor. I was privileged to view the original airing. During the show, Bing and David Bowie did this duet. David knew of Bing because his mother liked him, and David was in the middle of trying to tone down the rougher edges of his career at the time. He hated Little Drummer Boy, so songwriters wrote Peace on Earth as a counterpoint to Bing singing the song behind it. The vocals, though remixed later, were recorded live in one take after less than an hour of practice. And the rest is history. It has become a staple on radio during the holiday season, and the dialogue shows Bings traditional tried-and-true straight-faced sarcasm on Davids response to his question Do you ever listen to any of the older fellas? that was a staple of his acting career. Merry Christmas to everyone! https://youtube/watch?v=DiXjbI3kRus
