Biogas Development in Tigray/እበትም እንደ አባይ/Cow Dung like Abay (Nile) River and Fuel In the GTP, biogas technology is identified as one of the priority areas for reducing carbon emissions and creating access to efficient energy sources for cooking and lighting in rural areas. A bio-gas program is under going at national level and the task is provided to Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy. Four Regional State Bio-gas program coordination offices have started working under their respective regional water, energy and mineral bureaus. The numbers of livestocks determine the potentiality of the regions to bio-gas development. Other factors that determine the bio-gas production capacity is water and sewage. Without water, you cannot think of bio-gas. A bio-gas plant at your home backyard will be in meaningless unless problems related with water are solved. Regional states which moved forward and registered tremendous achievements in bio-gas development includes Tigray, Oromiya, Amhara and South. Though the bio-gas potential of regional states differs, as indicated in the Biogas National Meeting held recently at Mekele, Tigray, (with Oromia, Amhara, SNNP and Tigray according their order of potentiality,), Tigray has outperformed the other regions in bio-gas plant installations with 566 bio-gas plants built in the year 2014 alone. Since the program started six years ago, Tigray region has been able to build 2583 biogas plants as a whole and many people living in those areas have become beneficiaries of energy sources to be used for cooking and lighting. I went two months ago to Mekele and visited the bio-gas development endeavors in Tigray regional state in particular Wukro, Kilte Awlalo, and Gulo Mekeda. I traveled deep inside rural areas and saw with my eyes how farmers have changed their lives using modern energy sources such as bio technology namely biogas and bioslury. The by product thick fluid known as bio-slurry, that will be obtained from bio-gas is similarly to be used for household farms as fertilizer. And farmers used organic fertilizers like bioslurry have increased their wheat yields two three folds. By the way, Wukro and its surrounds is well known with wheat production. I received a documentary film from Tigray Regional State Energy and Minerals Bureau Head Ato Maereg Hadush. This is a short documentary film that showcases biogas development activities in Tigray Regional State, Ethiopia.
