Biographies of visiting artists Gaby Saranouffi Gaby Saranouffi is a dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher. She is currently Artistic Director of the International Festival of Contemporary Dance « I’TRÔTRA » and the VAHINALA Company. She lives and works in Madagascar. The I’Trôtra Festival has become a pivotal platform in the Madagascan dance landscape, that supports talent and artists in every genre –not only dancers benefit, but also musicians, instructors, visual artists, journalists and performance artists. As a young choreographer, Gaby is striving towards broadening the networks and skills among artists from Madagascar and foreign artists whom she works with by arranging exchange programmes and residencies in and around the island region. Gaby is an advisor for the Conseil National des Arts et des Lettres, which forms part of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage in Madagascar. In this capacity, she is currently working with Elia Ravelomanantsoa, the Minister of Culture and Heritage, on developing future projects. Gaby was recognised for her efforts in 2012 and was awarded a medal by the Minister in commemoration of International Women’s Day. Gaby trained in Madagascar at the Palais des Enfants Pionniers de Tamatave, in Paris, and in Senegal at l’Ecole des Sables under direction of Germaine Acogny and specialises in classical, contemporary and African dance. In order to find her own choreographic voice, Gaby uses the Madagascan aesthetic as a base to then find her own contemporary, innovative and unique creations. She has been invited to participate in residencies in Africa, Europe and Asia, as well the islands in the Indian Ocean, and has collaborated with acclaimed Madagascan and international artists such as Ismaël Lo, Hanitra Rasoanaivo of Tarika BE, Rossy, Salala, Rajery, Rola Gamana, Moeketsi Koena, Ariry Andriamoratsiresy, Bernardo Montet, Kim Bong Ho and others. She has appeared at numerous international festivals including Dance Umbrella (South Africa), Tanz im August (Germany), the Festival of Montpellier (France), Danse l’Afrique Danse (Mali) amongst others.
