Biography of Malam Salihu Sagir Takai Born to Mallam Muhammad Sagir and Hajiya Nana in 1960 at Unguwar Gini of Kano City, Mallam Muhammadu Sagir Takai the father of Salihu, is origin is from Takai Local Government, and was civil servant with the state who retired in 1974. Salihu underwent traditional Qur’anic tutorials at a very tender age. By the age of 6 years, he was enrolled into Kwalli Special Primary School, where he spent the required seven years. This sojourn at Kwalli prepared him for a higher pedestal. It was his primary school performance that fetched him admission into the then Dawakin Tofa Secondary School, now Science College, to pursue a five year post-primary educational career. All these happened between 1966 and 1978. In 1979, Mallam Salihu secured admission into then Kano State Polytechnic, School of Management Studies, where he bagged OND and HND Certificates in Business Administration. He did his one year mandatory National Service Scheme at the Triumph Publishing Company in Kano. In furtherance of his education, Mallam Salihu Takai got admission into Bayero University to study Mass Communication as Postgraduate Diploma Student and pursued Masters Degree in Public Policy and Administration. As a professional business administrator, Salihu is a fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN). After his studies and having acquired the necessary qualifications, Malam Salihu was employed by the Kano State Government and was posted to serve at the Board of Internal Revenue from 1984 – 1989. He started as an HEO Tax and rose to the rank of Inspector of Tax. As a Tax Officer, he worked vigorously with zeal, determination and honesty towards improving the revenue generation and process of the State. In appreciation of his hard work and excellent service record, Mallam Salihu was sponsored to attend a one year Inspectors of Tax/Audit course at the Staff Development Centre, Ilorin Kwara State in 1986/1987. Having served the Kano State Government for 5 years, he resigned his appointment and later joined SCOA Nig. Plc as a spare part controller for the Northern part of Nigeria. His service with SCOA exposes him to a lot of challenges, especially in the management of material and human resources of the company. His honesty and dedication earned him respect from both the management and staff of the company. Mallam Salihu faced strong resistance from the management of SCOA when he indicated his intention to leave the services of the company. He inevitably left SCOA Nig. Plc. In 1994 and started his personal business. It was during this period that he engaged himself in philanthropic activities. He constructed and rehabilitated a lot of hand pump boreholes, and also got involved in the repairs and rehabilitation of rural feeder roads, to mention a few activities. It was his philanthropic activities that inspired the people of Takai Local Government Area to draw him into politics, and in acceptance of his people’s call Malam Salihu Joined the then Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) and contested for the state assembly seat. In 1998, new political parties were registered and Malam Salihu Takai Joined All People’s Party (APP). He contested under platform of APP for Takai Local Government Chairmanship and won. During the tenure of Malam as the Chairman of Takai Local Government (1999 – 2002), a lot of achievements was recorded. After a successful completion of his tenure as Chairman, Takai Local Government in May 2002, Malam Salihu devoted his time to promoting ANPP’s manifesto and was subsequently appointed the Party’s State Caretaker Treasurer. It was by Allah’s grace and mercy and the efforts Mallam Salihu and his colleagues in the ANPP caretaker committee that a landslide victory was recorded for the party in the 2003 General Elections in Kano State. Malam Salihu participated in the transition and other committees that led to the swearing in of Malam Ibrahim Shekarau (Sardaunan Kano) as the Executive Governor of Kano State. Malam Salihu Takai was appointed the Honourable Commissioner in charge of Water Resources and Rural Development Ministry and a member of the State Executive Council. During his steawardship at the ministry, a lot of Viable projects were initiated and executed, amongst which are: Tamburawa 150mld Water Treatment Plant General Rehabilitation of Challawa Water Treatment Plants Rehabilitation of Dams and expansion of irrigation Schemes and etc In appreciation of these policies and the achievements of ANPP Government in Kano State, the good people of the State gave the Shekarau-led Government the mandate to rule the state for 2nd term. Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, the Executive Governor of Kano State, having acknowledged the enormous contributions of Malam Salihu Takai in the Water and Rural Development Ministry, reappointed him to serve again as Commissioner, this time in the Ministry for Local Government. He resigned his appointment of Commissioner Ministry for Local Government to contest for the Governorship Election of 2011 were PDP became victorious with very little margin Mallam Salihu Takai played a significant role in the formation of merger party which was later named APC but later defected to PDP alongside his political mentor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau (Sardannan Kano) considering the irregularities behind the National leadership of APC
