Bird Scuffles! I heard this one for the first time this week. The story is that he was sitting in with the Woody Herman Orchestra and was out front. Although he knew the arrangement no one had provided him with the chord changes for the tune so he was playing completely by ear.When he hits the bridge the first two times you can hear him scuffling to get through.On the third time he nails everything completely having learned the tune while playing. This example made me like him even better after hearing him go through the same changes that all of us encounter from time to time and triumphing in the end. Bird lives!
