Bird Weekend Fact Files… Buzzards Buzzards are formidable predators! They will make nearly all of their kills on the ground, and inhabit woodlands and can be found throughout Europe and some parts of Asia. We have two Buzzards at Paradise, that can be seen on our Birds of Paradise and at some point, you will also be able to see them in our Birds of Paradise flying displays. Sacred Ibis The distinctive African sacred ibis is characterized by its large size, primarily white plumage and conspicuous black head and neck, which lack feathers. The black-tipped wings have areas of bare red skin on the upper and lower surfaces, and there are also bare red areas on the breast and sides of the body. The long black legs and feet also lack feathers. We have one Sacred Ibis at Paradise called Thora, who you can see on our Birds of Paradise area. Penguins Penguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Antarctica. Highly adapted for life in the water, penguins have counter shaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have evolved into flippers. Most penguins feed on krill, fish, squid and other forms of sea life caught while swimming underwater. They spend about half of their lives on land and half in the oceans. There are around 17 different species of Penguin in the world. Paradise is home to a colony of 10 African Penguins, which are also known as Jackass Penguins as they make a similar noise to that of a Donkey.
