Bird flu viruses, anthrax... Jul 11, A CDC investigation confirmed that multiple failures in laboratory safety had caused possible exposures of lab personnel to anthrax and dangerous influenza strains, and officials promised sweeping reforms. The CDC also disclosed that, earlier this year, a benign avian flu virus was accidentally mixed with the highly lethal H5N1 flu virus and shipped to a Level-3 laboratory operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. No exposures are known to have resulted, but the CDC said it had closed its influenza laboratory until adequate procedures are put in place to prevent further such incidents.
