Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. It is written by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr., and Armando Bo. This is a heavy star studded cast with likes of Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Stone, Edward Nortan, Naomi Watts, and so much more. The premise of Birdman is about Riggan Thomson (played by Michael Keaton), a washed up Hollywood movie star who once played the superhero Birdman. He leaves his movie stardom to star and direct an adaptation of Raymond Carvers What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. During production, Riggan finds it difficult to maintain his family and ego. This is a very interesting and magnificently shot movie. Majority of the film, believe it or not, is literally one long take. There is no cuts here and there. Just a camera that has been turned on and really impressive editing tricks to make you think that there is cut. Normally, it would pretty difficult to get this style of filmmaking right because actors would most likely screw everything up and they have to do the entire sequence all over again, but with the right performers and story, anything is possible. All of the actors excel in their roles. Emma Stone (gosh I love her), Edward Norton, and Zach Galifianakis all do wonderful with their roles. Yet, all the praise in this film goes to Michael Keaton. This is a Michael Keaton show and it is no doubt he is going to earn an Oscar nomination. He gave this very grounded and very real performance through out this long take. The story is very well told. The setting and the music felt very surreal and very dark. It still blows my mind on how these actors managed to give such a natural and realistic performance while NOT screwing it up. It was also very humorous at times. There were moments where I and most of the audience were laughing our butts off. Nothing in this movie is ever boring. Everything feels like they are properly in place. Despite such a long take, the film looks gorgeous. The moment when the camera is shooting just city, it looks fantastic. The movie itself takes place in NYC. I managed to see this film in NYC and it felt as though all the stuff that is happening in the movie is happening in real life. That is how amazing this film is. The film really impressed me with its visual style of filmmaking, storytelling, and performances. This film is running a very limited release. If you are lucky enough to have a theater running this film, I highly suggest you see John Wick and THIS. Both films really deserve your attention. Please go see these movies. RATING: A+ Have you seen Birdman? What did you think about and what is your favorite Michael Keaton movie? Leave you comments below.
