Birkbeck’s Widening Access and Student Engagement Team had the pleasure of being part of IntoUniversity’s Supplementary Schools Project last weekend! 15, 9-11 year olds from Axis Supplementary School, along with their teachers and parents, visited Birkbeck on Saturday 17th January for a jam packed day of learning, fun and exploring their university aspirations. Students from Axis Supplementary School designed ‘university leaves’ where they wrote their university aspirations including: where the want to study, the course they are interested in and the societies and clubs they want to join to experience everything university has to offer! In the afternoon we enjoyed delivering a tour of Birkbeck, including a visit to the Peltz Gallery, all five academic schools, Senate House Library and the Birkbeck Cinema! We couldn’t help but take a look in Student Central at the fantastic sport and leisure facilities, with a quick stop off at the student union shop. We received some great feedback about the tour, including: The tour was the best thing ever!’ – thank you to the Widening Access & Student Engagement Team for being such good tour guides! Finally, we ended the day by holding a graduation ceremony for all the students from Axis Supplementary School, where the students presented their ‘university leaves’ and were awarded certificates to congratulate them on their journey through the IntoUniversity Supplementary School Project; donning official graduation attired, including mortar boards. We ended the day taking photos and having a party to celebrate! Congratulations to everyone who graduated!
