Birth News!!!! I began my career attending births in a level III trauma (which means that we had an in-house neonatologist, anesthesiologist, surgeons and OR 24 hours a day/7 days a week). This also meant that our facility was a teaching facility for nurses, medical students and residents. We had 5 labor and birth suites and 4 high risk rooms that could be used as birth rooms if needed. We also had 2 functioning operating rooms and another that held extra equipment but could be opened if necessary. When making the decision to attend home-births for low risk moms, a determining factor was the fact that I quickly realized that I had every single bit of equipment available to me during the labor and birth that I had in the hospital. The only exception was - the operating room. After taking into account time to open an OR and moving a woman into the OR I also realized that I could come up with only a few rare instances that I needed that OR immediately (and these instances involved high-risk moms). In MOST cases we had 20 to 30 minutes or more to get a woman into the operating room. Because I only attend low risk women and I do not have to do any of the unnecessary medical interventions that could cause complications I have found home birth to be the ABSOLUTE safest place for me to attend women. I also dont have to worry about a babys transitional period being affected by narcotics (narcotics are a respiratory depressant and if anyone tells you that an epidural does not affect a newborn, they are wrong or uneducated). I also dont have to worry about a mom or baby contracting a nosocomial (hospital super-germ) infection while admitted. It was a no brainer - the evidence and statistics supporting home-birth, my experience with the large amount of women that I had already attended........HOME BIRTH IS THE BEST AND SAFEST PLACE FOR LOW RISK MOMS!!!!!
