Picture: Mal Bruce Mrs Cook was admitted to KEMH at 20 weeks pregnant due to complications and spent a further four months on Ward 4 before giving birth to Kailee on September 4, 2012. Mrs Cook said she was so grateful for the care she received at the hospital, she couldn’t think of a anywhere she’d rather celebrate Kailee’s first birthday. “The staff were like family to us, especially when Kailee was diagnosed with down syndrome at birth, they came along the journey right beside us; we call them our angels,” Mrs Cook said. While on Ward 4, she was introduced to another long-stay patient, Simone Clarke of Wembley, who was also experiencing a complicated pregnancy. The women formed a friendship and although their babies were due to be born a week apart they ended up having them on the same day.
