It is a book about moral experience and how individuals and groups come to grips with danger and uncertainty. We tend to think of dangers and uncertainties as anomalies in the continuum of life, or interruptions of unpredictable forces into a largely predictable world. I suggest the contrary: that dangers and uncertainties… make life matter. This is a book about people who, in the midst of such challenges, are trying to live a moral life.”
