Bishop Mildred Bonnie Hines was the first woman elected bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church on July 18, 2008 at the 48th Session of the General Conference as the 98th bishop in succession of the AME Zion Church. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC, her Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Master of Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), Atlanta, Georgia, Clinical Pastoral Counseling, Colgate Rochester School of Divinity, and the Doctor of Ministry degree from the ITC. Bishop Hines has held pastorates at Waddell Chapel AME Zion Church, Shelby, NC, Saint Peters AME Zion Church, Gastonia, NC, Walls Memorial AME Zion Church, Charlotte, NC, and First AME Zion Church, Los Angeles, California. Bishop Hines holds a number of organizational offices: Among them are Dean, Conference Studies, Southwest Rocky Mountain Conference; Assistant Treasurer, Southwest Rocky Mountain Conference; Member of Board, Los Angeles Council of Churches; Member of Board, Los Angeles Pan Methodist Council; Member of Board, Traditionally Black Methodist Church Council Los Angeles; and Faculty Member, University of Southern California (USC). Upon her election in 2008, she stated: As Bishop, I am committed to developing church-wide ministries - social, spiritual and environmental - to deal with the needs of our members; developing intergenerational programs to illustrate the value of collaboration between all ages; working with other Bishops to develop church-wide, universal record-keeping, budgeting and congregational financial reporting methods; working with other Bishops to develop curricula and initiate church-wide workshops addressing morality and ethics to combat the impact of negative images to which we are exposed through various mediums; developing partnerships with colleges, universities, corporations and agencies, to expose our youth to 21st century educational pathways, careers and employment options; working to keep our ministers healthy as they continue to lead; and increasing outreach to the communities surrounding our churches so as to 1) assist in building and maintaining our communities; 2) meet the immediate needs of humankind, 3) bring souls to Christ and 4) expose people to the AME Zion Church.” A Mighty Woman In Leadership!
