Bishop Richard Malone, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, and Associates wrote: "We ask our elected officials and public policy makers to do all in their power to ensure that Maine supports its hardworking middle class while also safeguarding those most on the margins of society. Simply put, do not balance the budget on the backs of the poor and vulnerable." Gov. LePage and Republicans in the House and Senate are not treating the Maine budget as if it were a moral document at all.
