Bishops Friday Blog: The Shepherd and his Staff Ps 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your STAFF, they COMFORT me.” NKJV The Shepherd and his Staff are for COMFORTING sheep… not beating them, goading them, prodding and pulling them. The Shepherd and his Staff are for fighting wolves, bears and other predators. Even the crook of the Staff is used for rescuing sheep and up-lifting them. Not for hooking them into something. Likewise, the true Pastor and his Staff will use their God given skills to comfort the sheep by feeding and leading them to safe pasture. True Shepherds feed the flock and fight its enemies; not fight the flock and feed its enemies! They lead the sheep, not bleed them. You can always tell a false Shepherd and Staff because they scatter the flock. They fleece the fold and skin the old. Every year the flock gets smaller, weaker; more vulnerable. There’s nothing comforting in that. A true Shepherd and his Staff would rather die than let that happen.
