Bit of a public service post here, but please take the time to read it if you are a photographer especially. Ive helped two photographers this month who have lost files due to hard drive problems, and Ive just seen a post of a wedding photographer who is appealing for return of the only copies of wedding photos after a burglary. Best practice backup procedure follows the 3-2-1 principle, basically that a file doesnt truly exist till it exists: In three different locations On two different format mediums At least one copy off site Id highly recommend Crashplan to anyone who deals with a lot of files, for $59.99 (so about £35) a year, you can have one computer backed up with an unlimited amount of data. All your photos safe and recoverable from fire, burglary, virus etc, for about £3 a month, or less than most of us spend on coffee in a day! There are plenty of other services available of course, Im just recommending the one I use https://code42/store/
