Bit of a sad day, today... a magpie who has been coming with her - TopicsExpress

Bit of a sad day, today... a magpie who has been coming with her sister for quite a few months, for bits of food, suddenly started to have leg and feet problems a couple of weeks ago. First, her claws started to curl up, with the back claw on one foot, curling under her foot to the front of her foot. Then the claws on her other foot, tightened up as well. Then her legs started to collapse from under her, and she could only sit, rather than stand. We rang our vet, and the wildlife rescue people, and both said it could be a calcium deficiency (as many people feed them bread, and no meat), or rickets. We were advised to mix a calcium supplement with her mince, as well as freezing the mince for a week to rid it of any nasties. This, we did (the calcium supplement, we already had been freezing the mince), and were told that it could work in about six weeks. I had my doubts, as her legs and claws were very bad... well, today she and her sister turned up for breakfast, and she must have caught one of her legs overnight, and today it was broken, and hanging by a tendon. We managed to catch her ( her sister and her, both cried out) and took her to the vets, but nothing could be done, so she was put to sleep, and we brought her home and buried her. She was a beautiful bird, calling out from various vantage points all day long (before she got sick)... more so than any other magpie, Ive known. Her sister has been back several times looking for her... so it wasnt a very good day, today...
