Bit selection can be overwhelming no doubt. The FIRST step toward choosing the best one to enhance a horse’s performance comes in realizing that bits are a great tool for putting the “icing on the cake.” We spend months and years creating the cake and during that time if we’re taking the proper steps we can develop a horse that is soft and responsive to ANY kind of feel in/on his mouth/nose/head, etc. In other words, specific bits are great for enhancing what is ALREADY going well, but when it comes to fixing a problem, effective EDUCATION is the best long term solution. A solid education holds up no matter the circumstances or equipment/communication tools used - without exceptions! While it’s important to consider each horse’s preferences, if being effective DEPENDS on what’s in a horse’s mouth, it’s a sign that the human has failed to educate the horse somewhere down the line.
