Bit the bullet and completed a SLR rig overhaul. Began by sending in my 80-400 VR AF-S for much-needed cleaning & repair. $600 and a couple of weeks later got it back, and clad it in a new LensCoat as the old one was down to tatters. Fixed (I hope) a crack in the lens hood with epoxy (an artifact from a slip on steep Greenland Tundra- maybe also what bent part of the bayonet mount.) The patch is nicely covered by the LensCoat, too. My second Nikon GP-1 cable recently failed, but I found a 3rd-party GPS unit (Opteka GPN-1) that was cheaper in its entirety ($35) than just the Nikon replacement cable ($45)- quick tests in the back yard look fine. Also replaced my Black Rapid strap- the original carabiner was showing significant wear and I contacted them about it. A couple of days later a whole new brand-new strap arrived- Nikon could take some lessons from this great customer support!! Finally, I cleaned the D-7100 sensor & spruced up what I could on the camera body. Ready for a couple of years more birds!!
