Bits of Toronto - Gordon Sinclair (1900-1984) was a journalist, broadcaster & T.V. personality from the 1920s & for many decades after that. He told people that he had been born with the howls of wolves in the background. He was born in Cabbagetown near the old Toronto Zoo & those wolves were some of the animals held in that zoo. He started his writing career with the Toronto Star in the early 1920s & he gained fame with them in the later 20s by writing about his world travels in exotic locations. These were places his audience had never seen & few were likely to see & he took them there with his words. Always the controversial person he was let go from the Star but returned as a Sports Writer his next time around with them. He also did broadcasts on CFRB & in 1957 became part of the panel on the T.V. show Front Page Challenge. The idea behind the show was for the panel to ask questions of the hidden guest to arrive at the story that had brought them to peoples attention & in turn the show. Another panelist on the show was the writer Pierre Berton. Later in life he also received the Order Of Canada. To hear more about Gorden Sinclair, Cabbagetown & other well know people who lived in the neighbourhood please take one of the guided tours in the summer.
