Bits you Could Miss #2: The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out Obviously there is literally nothing wrong with this monumental track, and you could pick any of a hundred things that make it great. But the unsung heart and soul of it is the bass guitar. Andy Rourke has a fluid power that doesnt get mentioned anything like as often as Johnny Marrs endlessly inventive guitar. But Marrs greatness was always welded inextricably to Rourkes flowing melodic lines: not much that Marr plays would sound like much on its own, nor set against simpler bass lines. The verses and the long coda of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out all feature the same bass part, with its jaunty four-note figure at the end. Its the same, nineteen times out of the twenty in this edit. But there is one variation: the thirteenth time, underneath Morrisseys Ohhh [take me anywhere...] at 2:05 in the clip. He plays E C# B B instead of the usual E B C# B. Why? We may never know. But it happens the same way in the same place on the demo version, the one where Morrissey sings Theres a light in your eyes... never goes out. On the famous Thank Your Lucky Stars live bootleg theres again a single variation, but its a tiny bit different and this time at the very end.
