Black Friday. Almost all of us grew up with a false explanation - TopicsExpress

Black Friday. Almost all of us grew up with a false explanation of the term. Told it was the latter day of the year when retails stores hit the black (as in accounting profit column. They marked profit losses in red ink, gains in black.) Its been discovered that the term was first coined by a Philadelphia traffic cop in the 1950s. The city was engulfed with post Thanksgiving shoppers and tourists, parades, etc. All the city cops were required to work overtime and those 12 hrs were a nightmare given the rather unaccommodating city layout. Black Friday was a dreaded moniker. After it took hold, various corporate entities tried to spin it from a more positive origin- hence the black ink profit story. Which was total bullshit. The more you know.... [h/t: Paul Sanchez]
