Black Friday is the annual convergence of several things that I absolutely hate doing. Waiting in lines. Waiting in lines in the frigid cold. And waiting in lines in the frigid cold with crowds of overly hostile or oddly cheerful people to shop for things I really don’t need. To me, it’s the 10th circle of hell from Dante’s Inferno. Still, I understand Black Friday means different things to everyone... the only thing we love more than our “stuff” is buying more stuff. Whether you’re a Black Friday warrior or Black Friday boycotter, today kicks off the busiest shopping period of the year, though this year it all started yesterday when strung-out shopaholics invaded stores such as Target, Toys R Us and Kmart on — gasp! — Thanksgiving, of all sacred days. How could they? How could they not, I say. Black Friday couldn’t come soon enough for them. Or for the corporate giants who are salivating for a bigger piece of the pie. Why? Because were being turned into consumer zombies. Read how in my Black Friday column, below, and tune in to my Casual Fridays radio show today at noon on WLPR, 89.1-FM, when Karen Barloga Walker and I talk with advertising expert Martin Oleksy, streaming at lakeshorepublicmedia.org/local-programs/casual-fridays/. with Eric Reithel. posttrib.chicagotribune/31088138-537/davich-is-black-friday-making-us-consumer-zombies.html#.VHidqsmHgXQ
