Black Prez and H Wood “That 303” Single Review From the historic and still gritty Five Points area to the overpass on 6th avenue where Andy Garcia barrels into town driving a convertible for the movie “Things to do in Denver When You’re Dead”, there are some epic locations for videos in Denver. “That 303” gives us a video and single release this summer that mixes a montage of these scenes with views of the skyscrapers through some very young, and loosely fresh vision. This duo has performed with the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Talib Kweli, and Warren G just for starters, in this Mile High City where an organic and elemental gold rush has developed over the last two years due to the legalization culture. Popular electronic acts like Big Gigantic, Two Fresh, and Pretty Lights hail from this Rocky Mountain region, where festivals are some of the heaviest in attendance and outdoor activities abound. With nods to landmarks like The Westword Magazine’s headquarters, Sam’s #3 diner downtown, and the East End of the skyscrapers of Denver, the city is portrayed well here, spattered on a canvas of modern and a positive feel, shunning for the most part hardcore gangster ethics and martyrdom. Every city and every area still has its struggles however, and for every broken dream on the 16th pedestrian mall downtown to every new homeless person on the corner with a sign, with boom can come bust. A lot of the acts in Colorado know this, and the ingenious blend of electronic tones on this track can guarantee this duo a nice uptick of mainstream appeal right in the musical spots that can be hard to reach. At times in a mix, there is nothing like hearing the resonating layer of synth, as class acts like John Digweed and Oakenfold have shown in their turntablist conquests. Weaving the “303” area code of Denver’s phone listings on into the track with lyrical finesse, this video seems to embellish loyalty to the local sports teams, a general notion of wanting to stick around this location, and homage to the party atmosphere of a big city on the forefront of being a blueprint for others in the future. Eminem, one of the true geniuses of lyrical creation, sometimes reached down deep for inspiration, coming from perhaps a darker and post-industrial world in Detroit. Instead of the slightly more utopia-esque vision that some have of partying, enjoying time with their friends as well as hustling a little to make sure they do more than break even; some are understandably caught in territorial battles. This single embraces a bit more of the earlier on the plateau, The mastering, levels, and mixing on this single are carried out well and the female adding backing vocals later shines well in the final product. As far as Black Prez and H Wood themselves, they’ll probably be done enjoying another view of the Rockies or a cold crafted micro brew by the time you read this; at 5280 feet you have to let loose more than every once in a while.
