Black and White Are we not all the same children of God? Why is - TopicsExpress

Black and White Are we not all the same children of God? Why is their hate like venom of a snake? Some of us sentenced with nothing more than a nod, They pronounced our fate, from which we won’t wake. Zimbabwe was a land of pulchritude, But now, it is marred with the blood of greed. With high heads, into our farms they intrude With the fire of their hate, they burn the deed. Why can we not live together: live as one? Can we make amends, not live in the past? But no, we cannot stay, they want us gone. Then for our homes, a simple lot will be cast It’s my land they want, it’s me who they fight It’s all about greed, wrapped, in black and white. Author Notes This a protest poem against the racism and discrimination that occurs against the white minority in Zimbabwe (Africa). It is in the form of a Sonnet (10 syllables a line; 14 lines). There, there are white people having their land (often farms) being stolen, their families (and themselves beaten), and a wide variety of discrimination against them, just because of their skin colour. - Looking for a suggestion/help for the 8th line (last bit of the 2nd quatrain): I have used burn the deed, intending to portray the title deed being burnt, and - as a double meaning - have it also mean that they are burning the deeds that have been done - destroying the deeds of the white people - their lives. Is this powerful, or would it be a bit sketchy? Someone looked over it and said that in-deed would be better than the deed - as in-deed (using poetic licence to put the hyphen in) would mean burning the deed, but also mean that those intruding the farms would burn (here in-deed would be defined as truly). Any helpful suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you for reading © Steven Hodgskin.
