Black people. We keep celebrating the first black this, or the first black that. Is every black leader or representative that rises within the ranks of the system working in your favor? Do we hold them accountable, or are we in love with what they represent? OR are we truly willing to support them IF they DO work for our best interests, and happen to meet resistance(from the higher ups in that system), rather than just isolate ourselves from them, leaving them out in the cold? Even if they are working for our favor and true hearted, yes, they may use their influence to create a better atmosphere for those behind them to prosper within the system. But then at what point does the whole structure be remodeled (or the creation of an alternative model be viably considered) for the sake of establishing a level playing field of REAL equal opportunity not just theoretical? Granted the struggle Africans have been through, we can appreciate what it represents to be a first black fill in the blank, but by which lens are we utilizing to see ourselves in this process? When thousands of years ago, Africans were full of riches, great civilizations and roamed the world?.. What I am saying is that even if we must be proud of how far weve come, beyond that, we must NOT lose focus, and we HAVE to understand that until these symbolic victories translate into a momentum of real concrete tangible solutions that addresses the needs of the masses of us as a people (Globally), we may make the mistake of ONLY aspiring to be the first black whatever, simply for the title (content merely with what it represents) rather than recognizing the goal from the beginning is to move from under the ruling of a global elite white supremist social/economic structure. Shouldnt we teach the upcoming generation to do the latter? To aspire be MORE than pawns, bishops, rook(ies), knights on a chess board? And Im not even saying we should be kings/queens on this board, Im saying that we should aim to be the experienced PLAYERS controlling the damn board! Feel me? As has been proven time after time, just because someone is black and is in a position of power, influence and authority, doesnt mean they will automatically make decisions that will benefit the people. Lets upgrade our ability to ONLY hail and promote leaders, individuals, and organizers that are truly of integrity and of great character all across the board, instead of basing our support (or lack there of) on superficial things.
