Blakrome canister restoration I picked up this throne 3 years - TopicsExpress

Blakrome canister restoration I picked up this throne 3 years ago, I couldn’t have gotten luckier. The ONE missing piece to my BK collection, something I never thought I’d find and I’m sitting there staring at a Buy it now, and LOCAL! The seller told me the auction was up for about 2 or 3 minutes when I bought it. What a find! For me anyway, I’ve only seen one other BK throne, it was NOS in the plastic bag and the owner wouldn’t sell it seperately. It was with an NOS 20-13-16 BK set that he wanted around $1500 for. And this was probably10 years ago. Anyway, this had a few miles on it. But, NO PROBLEM... BK is a really restorable wrap. What you might not know is the thing that fails cosmetically on BK and makes it look like heck is the clear lacquer topcoat. Strip the original lacquer and re clear and you can get yourself quite a remarkable finished product. As good or better than new! The throne was all original except it was missing it’s original handle, and the aftermarket one on it wasn’t the best fit. I took it completely apart and first removed the horrible original clear coat with lacquer thinner and 0000 steel wool. It was pretty simple and it works like a champ, you won’t hurt the BK finish. Next step is to re-clear it in modern automotive 2 part acrylic polyurethane. Then I wrapped it up to protect it and sanded out the entire inner mahogany shell & maple reinforcing rings. I cleaned everything up and sharpened up all the edges. Keep in mind that lurking under decades old dirty scratched up scruffy drum shells is beautiful new wood just waiting to get out! All you have to do is get rid of the scruff! I took the white vinyl cover to a sewer I know for a quick repair, and did some trimming to get a better fit on the handle. Polish up the rest of the metal parts and put it back together and WOW, you might not believe it’s the same piece.
