Blender is a free and open source 3D animation suite. Over the years it has proven to be a heavyweight contender for those who do not want to pirate commercial 3d software and/or really dont have the funds to shell out a few thousand dollars for apps such as 3DSMax or Maya. Right off the bat, if you download and start up Blender, your first reaction maybe... holy crap... how do I use this? Thankfully there are some pretty good tutorials online, that take out the feeling of being overwhelmed. One of the best is on CGcookie. Many of their tutorials are free, and those are enough for you to get pretty dangerous. Blender is available for Windows (32 and 64 bit varieties), Mac, and GNU/Linux.
