Blessed Assurance Ed Sealy The following are a few excerpts for the rough copy of my book The Inside Story. Hymn writer Fanny Crosby penned these famous words, “Blessed Assurance Jesus is mine.” The devil is the author of doubt. He caused Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden by casting doubt upon God’s word. He said, “Yea, hath God said?” The devil seeks to send our soul to hell. If he loses out, he will then try to make us doubt that we are saved. In so doing, he will render us ineffective for God. Let us look at what the word of God has to say about assurance. If you just prayed to receive Christ, then here is your confidence or assurance, God wants you to have the assurance of eternal life “ These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:13) Some people cry when they are saved while others laugh. The emotions may differ with each person. Therefore assurance must never come from any feelings we may or may not have experienced. The word of God must be our only source of assurance. If I follow a road map or GPS closely, I will get to my destination. My trust is not in my feelings but in the accuracy of the road map. Likewise my salvation, if I follow what God’s says in his word, I am guaranteed salvation. Allow me to give you some verses that I leave with people who are newly saved. I ask them to read these verses five times a day for a complete week. These verses are promises from God. If you do what is required in the verse, God must do what he says he will do or he is a liar. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12) Did you receive him? That is your part. What does God say he will do if you receive him? He will make you part of his family. How long will you be in his family? Is there anything you can do to get out of your earthly family? There is also nothing you can do to get out of God’s family. This is an eternal relationship Our second verse on assurance comes from the book of Romans. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Rom. 10:13) You can place your name in the whosoever slot. What does God say happens if you call out to him to save you? He makes a promise that you shall be saved. If you do your part and call, God will do his part and save you. Are you beginning to see the assurance from God’s word. Notice the confidence found in Philippians. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Phil. 1:6) The moment you were saved, God began his good work of salvation in you. How long will it continue? It will continue until the day of Jesus Christ or the time when he will come for you or until the day you die. You can have utmost confidence in this word. Satan introduced doubt in the Garden of Eden when he said, Ye, hath God said? He was seeking to cause doubt on what God had said. He will do the same to you and me. That is why you need to trust in what God’s word says and not the lies of the enemy. It is good to take your bible and record the date of your salvation. Anytime the devil tries to make you doubt, just open your bible and remind the devil that it was all taken care of on this particular date. He will try to remind you of your past sin which Christ has already forgiven. It is at this point you can remind him of his future. He is going to hell. You have a right to tell the devil to go to hell. Your assurance will also come as you spend time daily in the word of God and prayer. If you sin, confess it to God and he will forgive you. Sin does not break your relationship with God, it breaks your fellowship. A husband and wife may have a spat in the morning and not be on speaking terms for a while, but the marriage relationship is still intact. Once they say I am sorry, fellowship is restored and all is well. When you sin, tell God you are sorry and he restores the fellowship. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9) Your relationship always remains intact even though fellowship by times may be broken. Tomorrow I will give a five point protection plan which will provide utmost assurance of your salvation.
