Blizzard Blast is coming, and the weather forecast is PERFECT for a winter OCR. With heavy now fall on Saturday answering the Race Directors prayers, the race day itself is going to be sunny and mid 30s. What the hell do you wear? Many people dont do much outdoor training in the winter, even fewer do a lot of OCRs in the winter. Lets break it down. To start - dress for 10f hotter than the weather forecast. Youll be cold to start, but warm up quick, and its better to be a bit chilly than be overheating. Leave the ski suit at home! Shoes are less important that your socks. Grippy trail shoes are a must - spikes or studded Icebug USAs are better. But pair them with thick technical hiking socks that will keep your feet warm when wet. Do NOT wear spikes indoors! A good baselayer of ColdGear or its equivalent may be all you need, but throw a technical pair of pants and a shirt to go over if you feel the need. Of course, if youre Mario SpeedoGuy DaSilva - youll just rock the thermal speedo :o Thin gloves inside thick mittens are the best approach to keep your hands warm - but cold gear style gloves will help. Cover your face with a buff, and you may not even need a hat. 280 people from the New England Spahtens will be picking up custom team gear, getting access to a dedicated team space (which will be crowded! Leave those huge bags at home!) and running in several team waves starting at 12:40pm - and this is looking like a blast of a course at nearly 6 miles! More if we can sled :) See you Sunday!
