Blog Number Fifty-Nine Keeping Jesus in Christmas or Who Lets Us Into Heaven? The Hallmark channel is now filled with Christmas movies. My mother used to love that channel. Over a year ago as I sat with her in hospice she had the channel on and I saw every manner of Hallmark movies. The themes of the movies seemed to be the same; there was a tragedy that was averted at Christmas time by a person who was acting badly who through the “Spirit of Christmas” forsook bad ways and became kind. In the midst of these Christmas conversions there is also the theme of “family” and family reconciliation. I did notice a distinct absence of Jesus in any of these Christmas movies. Hallmark has done to Christmas movies what many people do in their daily lives; eliminate Jesus. How often do we neglect Jesus for family activities, club activities or sports activities? How often do we put academic excellence above Biblical training or achieving? Is family, shopping, or sleeping in really a substitute for worship of our creator? After we die and go to the gates of heaven who will decide whether our eternity is one of heaven or hell? Will it be a sports coach? How about a retailer? Is it a club president who determines our eternity? Will we be allowed into heaven based on our academic standing? It is the Lord Jesus who determines our eternal destiny. If we have denied him in this life or made him an afterthought behind our “regular” activities will he reject us at heaven’s gates? In our lives are we trying to impress coaches, ourselves, our neighbors or the Lord Jesus? If we do not put Jesus first in our lives and worship we may be hurting ourselves for eternity.
