Lesson One is all about wedding traditions and getting you inspired (with over 100 ideas!). Did you know that jumping the broom is a Welsh, Romani, and African tradition? I didnt! In English, the idea comes from broomstick wedding which was used to describe a civil ceremony which may not have had the backing of the church in a time when all weddings were church weddings. The Welsh placed a broom diagonally in the doorway and first groom, then bride, jumped over the broom to seal the marriage. If they wanted to dissolve it later, they jumped backwards over a broom! Romani in the British Isles were known to jump the broom to complete their marriage ceremony, too. In this case, the broom was sometimes a branch from the flowering broom plant. The Romani may have brought the tradition to Britain in the 1500s. The African American custom of jumping the broom saw a revival with the publication of Alex Haleys Roots in the 1970s. Once a form of non-legally binding marriage impressed upon slaves by their owners in the South, the custom has been revived and reclaimed as a connection to the past and roots of the African American community. Another custom of jumping the broom dictates that the person who jumps highest or lands first may win control of the household. This unit is full of all kinds of fun facts and history about everything from the custom of dressing bridesmaids and groomsmen in finery to the symbolism in old verse: something old something new something borrowed something blue And a silver sixpence in her shoe Next unit: Invitations & paper goods!
