Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red is an art installation at the Tower of London, that marks the centenary of the First World War and pays tribute to British and Commonwealth soldiers killed in the First World War. Volunteers began planting the ceramic poppies in July and they now encircle the iconic landmark, creating not only a spectacular display visible from all around the Tower, but also a location for personal reflection. Every night at twilight during the creation of this installation, the names of 180 serving military have been read out in a roll of honour, followed by the Last Post bugle call played by a single bugler at Tower Hill terrace. The scale of the installation intends to reflect the magnitude of such an important centenary creating a powerful visual commemoration, with each poppy (888,246 of them) representing a fallen soldier. Lest we forget.
