Bloomsday is fast approaching! June 16 is known around the globe as Bloomsday, the day on which James Joyce’s epic novel Ulysses takes place. Portland joins the celebration with our 5th Annual Bloomsday Portland event, June 11-16. It’s fun and it’s free! Wednesday, June 11 Ulysses for Beginners, a rollicking performance piece performed by AIRE (American Irish Repertory Ensemble), uses scenes, songs, and humor to explain the story line of Ulysses in one hour. 7:30 p.m., Bull Feeney’s Pub, 375 Fore Street Saturday, June 14 Tea and Trivia kicks off the Bloomsday Walk with a Joycean trivia contest, music, and refreshments. 11:00 a.m., Maine Irish Heritage Center, 34 Gray Street Poldy’s Perambulation is a Bloomsday Walk from the Maine Irish Heritage Center to various spots in downtown Portland, including pubs, bookstores, and the Portland Public Library, with excerpts from Ulysses read by AIRE actors at each location. Costumes encouraged! Noon-4:00 pm., Downtown Portland Monday, June 16 Readings from Dubliners. To mark the 100th anniversary of the publication of James Joyce’s short story collection Dubliners, AIRE actors and Joyce lovers will read from the stories. 7:30 p.m., Maine Irish Heritage Center, 34 Gray Street Information: airetheater
