Blown away by a recent review of Memento on Amazon by Mike Wakeman. Im pleased to know that I make death sound like a whiskey infused blast. Check it out: It’s amazing how Bayard can sing songs which hold a real sense of longing with a range that inspires hope. “Bear My Heartache” and “Walking Boss” sound like they would fit directly alongside anything from the dark melodies from the True Detective sound track.. In contrast to this sadness, “Garden Gnome” and “Fly Away Home” are truly fun songs. The latter makes death sound like a whiskey infused blast. The love life of Jo-ann and her man can’t help but bring a smile to your face. Lines like, “you’re a big walking false advertisement” will get stuck in your head but you won’t mind. “Make It If I Try” matches his instrumental ability with his sense of lyrical rhythm. This song shows that wherever Bayard is trying to “make it” to, his intent is to bring his listeners along. The journey is going to be fantastic. This may be the first solo project by Nick Bayard, but it is clear that in the years leading up to this album he has reaped in every experience, dark, fun, sad, and glorious. His lyrics and voice carry those experiences with a clarity that is comparable with musicians who’ve been honing their craft on their own for decades. It’s fair to say that if you like Old Crow Medicine Show, T. Bone Burnett you will enjoy this album. If you can appreciate the folk leanings of other bands such as The Mighty Stef, The Tax Payers, Flogging Molly and even Social Distortion you’ll find this album fun and meaningful as well. Just get it. You’ll like it.
