Blueway Fishing Tournament info Kayak fishing tournament offers anglers chance to win cash prizes FORT MYERS, Fla., Oct. 6, 2014 – The winner of the 2014 Calusa Blueway Fishing Tournament will take home $1,000 at the annual event scheduled for Nov. 1. Cash prizes will also be available to those who place in the tournament. Rapidly becoming the premier tournament in Southwest Florida, the catch-and-release fishing tournament is expected to draw 50 to 75 anglers to Lee County. This year, the Lee County Parks & Recreation event features a one-day competition for anglers who catch and release snook, redfish, seatrout and other species. All fishing must occur on Lee County, Fla., waterways. The Thursday, Oct. 30, captains’ meeting is at Angler’s Inn, Matlacha, with refreshments from Bert’s Bar & Grill. The weigh-in happens Saturday, Nov. 1, at Pineland Marina. (Due to Halloween, the captain’s meeting will not happen the night before the tournament.) The first place finisher will win $1,000. The second- place winner will receive $500, based on 50 participants. The third-place angler gets $300, with the fourth-place winner getting $150, and the fifth-place winner earning $50. “Fishing to win cash prizes should amp up competition,” Blueway Coordinator Mike Hammond said. “The Calusa Blueway trail and Southwest Florida waters are among the finest in the nation for kayak fishing. We are grateful to Pine Island for its support of the sport and the annual tournament.” Tournament proceeds benefit the Calusa Blueway, which is hosting the event with assistance from Florida Sea Grant and Lee County Parks & Recreation. “Florida Sea Grant is excited to be assisting with this tournament for the fifth year running,” said Joy Hazell, Lee County’s Sea Grant agent. Returning this year is a streamlined online registration site for anglers, who pay a $65 fee to compete. Registration is open now. Go to 2014calusabluewayfishingtourney.eventbrite to sign up. For more information, contact Hammond at (239) 707-7981 or MHammond@leegov, or Hazell at hazellje@leegov or (239) 707-1267. The annual tournament has been a fixture for years of the Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival – a longtime Southwest Florida autumn event that has transitioned this year. Instead of an annual three-day happening, the festival’s activities have been segmented to offer canoeists, kayakers and SUPers more to do in various months. But the fishing tournament is remaining on the first weekend in November. Stay tuned for more events and further details. Find Calusa Blueway on Facebook or CalusaPaddle on Twitter.
