Board Meeting Review, 8-12-14 The Board held their August meeting last evening. Here are some highlights: Gina Skinner and Katie Leonard, elementary school assistant principals and Directors of our North and South Summer Learning Academies, did a PowerPoint and video overview of the summer program for 200 of our elementary students. Formative testing indicated two months of reading gains for the students (as opposed to the 2-3 months of “summer slide” students often exhibit). It was clear that both students and staff enjoyed the Academy work for those 27 days. Dr. Angela Hinton gave updates on our Early College High School and Scholars Academy. Jason Paddock updated the Board on the digital learning initiative and the iPad training session to be provided for the members on August 26. Dr. Nancy Turner reviewed changes in personnel and programs in Special Services. Dr. Hinton reviewed PASS and MAP testing information: All elementary and middle schools are predicted to be rated either “Excellent” or “Good” on the state report card. We also had 80 perfect PASS test scores compared to 46 last year. The Board approved twelve former Boiling Springs High School students and five former Chesnee High School students to receive diplomas as they had met all credit requirements but the exit exam which the legislature through Act 155 has removed as necessary for graduation. One of the requests came from a student who was a senior in 1992. Among many personnel changes and appointments, the Board also voted unanimously to approve the recommendations of Martha Waters, Assistant Principal at Boiling Springs Intermediate; Angela Jill Cooke, Nurse Supervisor; and Trent Hardee, Assistant Principal at Rainbow Lake Middle. Don Icenhower and Kevin Davis, the architect, updated the Board on the CHS construction project, then Mr. Icenhower discussed issues with the softball and baseball fields at Boiling Springs Middle and BSH, the utility building at BSH, and modular units at BSH and CHS. The Board voted to approve low bids for the modular units, though they were higher than expected. The Board also approved the use of “Construction Management at Risk” as the delivery method for the new elementary school project. An RFP for architects will be issued this week. The goal is to have it ready for Fall 2016.
