Bob Ash nominated me to share three positive things and nominate three people to do likewise. Here are my offerings: 1. Love is infinitely more than we realize. It is more than an attitude, or a sentiment, more than a collection of feelings and thoughts, more than a desire, more than instinct, more than any sensation or action. It manifests in all these ways, but isnt limited to them. Even in our ordinary language, the word love is both a noun and a verb, and in psychology it is understood to have both conscious and unconscious dimensions. It is more than all that we typically deem good, right, and even sacred. It has no ultimate opposite in hate, fear, or apathy. In many spiritual traditions, it is affirmed that Love is the supreme and all-encompassing Truth, the essence of existence itself, and even the manifestation of everything that was, is, or shall be. In Christianity, we simply say that God is Love. 2. We are interconnected. All is one. Whether we think of our existence in terms of physics or spirit, the deepest insight reveals that separation is an illlusion. Even so, this illusion seems necessary in order for each of us to begin budding into our uniquness, yet our uniqueness attains its fullest blossoming when we intentionally integrate it with mindfulness of our interconnectedness, our oneness. 3. We are co-creators. There is much peace and freedom in regarding all of existence as a single work of art, a cosmic dance, a divine tapestry, the Big Dream of the Big Dreamer, in which we are each privilieged to be co-dreamers, co-weavers, co-correographers and co-dancers. When we can abide in this perspective, no action, emotion, or thought, no matter how unpleasant, is one that we cannot bear and learn and grow from. Rather than diminish our compassion for suffering, of others or our own, this realization helps us slow down and avoid the irony of creating more suffering by foolishly trying to eliminate it.
