Bob Drews Bob Drews 12:31pm Aug 28 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Alessandro Negrete, [email protected], 323.271.9987 California Immigrant Youth Demand for Democratic Leaders To Take a Hard-line Stance for a Truly Inclusive Immigration Reform The California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance (CIYJA) is an immigrant and undocumented youth led coalition that represents 12 different organizations, from San Diego to Sonoma CA. We have released a list of 7 Democratic members of Congress that we will pressure to take a hard-line stance against border enforcement and criminalization of immigrants in Congress. We intend to also push these 7 elected officials to publicly urge President Obama to expand deferred action for all undocumented people, as Congress continues to debate immigration reform in DC. These 7 members of Congress are: Nancy Pelosi, Xavier Becerra, Loretta Sanchez, , Karen Bass, Zoe Lofgren, Barbara Lee, and Eric Swalwell. Below are our demands; we are giving the 7 Congress members a deadline of September 4, 2013 to make a press statement in support of expanding deferred action, and be leaders against further border militarization and criminalization of undocumented immigrants. “We know that Republicans in the House don’t want to move on anything that recognizes the political equality of the undocumented so it is the responsibility of the President and our Democratic elected officials to take immediate action” Neidi Dominguez, Campaign Manager of CIYJA firmly states. CIYJA’s Immigration Reform Demands: 1. Support immigration reform that begins with the immediate suspension and release of all currently detained immigrants that are low priority under prosecutorial discretion and granting them administrative relief by expanding deferred action. 2. End continued expansion of interior enforcement--which includes Secure Communities, which makes communities less safe and leads to racial profiling. 3. End wasteful, unnecessary border spending and improve accountability and oversight of Customs and Border Protection. 4. Abolish the continuous employment and above poverty level requirements for adjustment of status within any immigration reform piece of legislation. 5. Protect all workers’ labor and civil rights. Our immigration policies should reflect the core ideals of fairness and respect for work. 6. Be inclusive of the LGBTQ Community within any immigration reform legislation.
